preserve your tooth with a root canal

A serious, prolonged toothache usually indicates an infected tooth

Tooth infections will not go away on their own, and can cause tooth loss if left untreated

Root canal therapy is a fast and minimally-invasive way to restore your tooth

With an early root canal, you can get relief from your pain and discomfort, save your tooth, and restore your smile and your bite

When is a root canal necessary?

Root canal therapy is required to treat and restore teeth that have become infected. Tooth infections happen when untreated tooth decay eats through the outer layers of your teeth, or your enamel and dentin are destroyed by oral trauma, such as a slip and fall.

When the hard outer layers of your teeth are damaged, this exposes the vulnerable interior “pulp” that is full of nerves and blood vessels, and keeps your teeth alive. When the pulp becomes infected, the tooth will slowly begin to die.

A root canal is required to remove this decayed material and restore the tooth’s natural shape and appearance. If you don’t get root canal therapy, you risk losing your tooth.

What can i expect from the treatment process?

First, Dr. Sandhu will clean and numb your mouth. Then, he will use a dental drill to remove any damaged or decayed enamel from your teeth, and he will create a small opening in the tooth. Through this opening, he will use a variety of special dental tools to remove any damaged or decayed pulp from inside the tooth.

Once the tooth has been cleaned, Dr. Sandhu will flush and disinfect it, and fill it with “gutta-percha,” a rubbery substance that supports the inside of the tooth. Then, the tooth will be covered up with a filling or a dental crown to protect it and restore your smile.

how long does it take to recover from a root canal?

You won’t have any downtime after your root canal treatment. Your tooth may feel a little bit sore, but there is no prolonged healing or recovery period. You can typically get back to your day-to-day routine or even go back to work after your treatment, unless you have been sedated with oral conscious sedation, which takes several hours to wear off.

what are my sedation options at riverside tooth co.?

We offer both minimal inhaled sedation (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation. Laughing gas helps mitigate anxiety and reduces pain and discomfort, and its effects last only about 5 minutes after your treatment ends, so it’s ideal if you want to quickly get back to your daily routine.
Oral conscious sedation has deeper, longer-lasting effects, and may cause you to fall asleep or forget what happens during your appointment. However, you can’t drive for at least 4-6 hours and you won’t be able to go back to work, so you will need to make the necessary arrangements before your treatment. Contact us now to learn more about your sedation dentistry options for root canal therapy.
